Bakeries

What would a trip to Leavenworth be without baked goods? Everywhere in Leavenworth you can find a bakery.

Just behind the storefronts on Front Street is the cute little Gingerbread Factory. You can get great gingerbread cookies, including little bite-sized gingerbread men for the kids. They also have quiches and soups and cofee and a deli. And then… surprise! gingerbread Christmas tree ornaments and puzzles and home decor and cookie jars and kitchen utensils. And be sure to pick up a gingerbread house kit to take home and build with the kids, or a doggie house make from doggie treats.

And right next to the Gingerbread House is Café Verona and Bakery, a quaint little family run café with breakfast, sandwiches, salads and burgers and strudel made fresh daily.

On Front Street you can get bread and pastries and pretzels at the Danish Bakery. In fact during the Christmas season, you can see pretzels hanging on a Christmas tree right on the sidewalk in front of the store.

As you come into town from the east is the Bavarian Bakery. All kinds of breads, like sourdough rye bread, and from October through the end of the year, you can get Christmas stollen. Coconut maccaroons, German pasteries made from scratch using fresh butter, raisin and cinnamon bread. Pardon me a minute… I need to step out and get something to eat… with butter on it.

One of the places Mrs. Accidental Bavarian likes to stop every time we are in Leavenworth is the Anjou Bakery in Cashmere, just down the road. They have artisan breads and fruit nut crostini. In fact, the head bread baker was a finalist in the Bread Bakers Guild of America Team USA 2002 World Cup of Bread team. Wow, I’m impressed!
